FORMER 1992 WINNER OF OMYA-MITCHELL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP DRIVES RESEARCH INTO ‘GREEN ENERGY’ PROJECT
11th April, 2002

Until now it has not been efficient to extract methane from landfill sites like those found in Bathurst, N.S.W.

Former recipient of the Omya scholarship in 1992, Jason Scarborough of the University of NSW, hopes he will change that with his development and research project into methane extraction as part of the final stages of a Masters in Environment Engineering and Science.

His project, which is supported by Country Energy and the Bathurst City Council, aims to reduce the number of extraction points necessary, thereby reducing the cost. His project uses two methods to identify methane deposits: an infrared camera, sensitive to heat and a geophysics method using an electrical current through the ground to develop a picture of the sub surface.

Country Energy managing director Craig Murray said if successful an electricity generation plant would be established in Bathurst in about two years.
