In the food and pharmaceutical industries calcium carbonate is fast gaining recognition as a cost competitive source of calcium for fortification and manufacture.

Until recently, most calcium used in food fortification was sourced from milk-derived products. However, the high relative costs of these products and other uses for them has seen the food industry look to an alternate supply of calcium. Calcium carbonate has one of the highest level of elemental calcium of all sources and this is one reason the trend towards fortifying (or enriching) many foods with calcium carbonate is gaining in popularity. Cereals, fruit juices, soy products, milk and other dairy produce are all placing calcium-enriched products into the marketplace to meet consumer demand.
